What assessors do

Assessors are the people who are trained to assess Seafood ITO trainees' skills and knowledge against our unit standards. Assessors are registered with us according to the scope of their area of expertise.

We make sure they have experience which is relevant to the qualifications they assess (for example, someone assessing fish filleting must have experience working in that area). Some of our assessors have experience in more than one area and are qualified to assess in all of these areas.

An assessor:

  • plans assessments with trainees and others involved in the assessment process
  • assesses a trainee’s evidence and decides whether it meets unit standard requirements
  • provides feedback to trainees about their evidence
  • tells trainees their assessment results
  • reports trainees’ assessment results to Seafood ITO
  • arranges reassessments for trainees
  • maintains records of assessment activities and results
  • participates in moderation activities.

Assessors may be an employee within a company or they may work for a polytechnic, private training establishments (PTE) or another training organisation.
