Aquaculture Sector
Aquaculture is expected to become a billion dollar industry in the next few years.
Aquaculture is the New Zealand seafood industry's fastest growing sector. It is the process of farming seafood using either rope culture, trays and on-shore tanks for shellfish, or sea cages and on-shore tanks for fish.
New Zealand's biggest aquaculture or marine farming activities are GreenshellTM mussels, king salmon, oysters and paua. Further potential aquaculture species include turbot, eels, rock lobster, sea horses, Bluff oysters, geoduck clams, and some seaweeds and sponges.
The Marlborough Sounds is New Zealand's most important mussel and salmon farming area with other key farm sites located in Golden Bay, the Coromandel, Stewart Island and the Far North.
New Zealand's aquaculture production has risen considerably over the past decade and the sector now employs nearly 30 percent of the total seafood industry workforce. It has the potential to provide many more jobs for regional economies.
