Improve training delivery

Workshops for seafood industry trainers

Literacy and numeracy are big issues in the workplace – four out of every 10 people employed in the seafood industry have low literacy and numeracy skills – which means that they find reading and using numbers difficult.  This can and does have a big impact on performance in the workplace.

The Seafood ITO has developed workshops for industry trainers to introduce you to the impact of poor literacy and numeracy in the workplace, and to give you some ideas and strategies that you can put in place to help your trainees who do have low literacy and numeracy skills.  The workshops will also cover planning, delivering and evaluating your training sessions – valuable skills which will help you to continually improve your training delivery in the workplace.

What will you gain from the workshops?

  • a practical understanding of how adult literacy and numeracy affects your workplace.
  • skills to assess and evaluate trainees’ literacy and numeracy skills, including how to use information from the online “Literacy & Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool”.
  • strategies to develop trainees’ literacy and numeracy skills in the workplace.
  • strategies to improve overall training delivery in the workplace.
  • an understanding of how the Seafood ITO’s Training Workbooks & Trainer Guides are laid out, and how to use them to support your trainees learning in the workplace.

How are the workshops run?

  • the Seafood ITO will come to your workplace to deliver the workshops when it suits you.
  • the first workshop takes a half day, followed by a second half day workshop 6 to 12 weeks afterwards – in-between you’ll have the opportunity to put your new skills into practice in your workplace.
  • the workshops are fully subsidised by the Seafood ITO.
