Training can encourage maintenance and revitalisation of customary fishing.
Mäori interests hold a significant proportion of the seafood industry and Mäori have a huge role to play in the future of the New Zealand seafood industry. Seafood ITO meets the specific training requirements of iwi, enhancing industry capability by developing people who manage fisheries assets.
Traditional Mäori fishing and management practices have adapted over the centuries to ensure proper guardianship of kaimoana, kairoto and kaiawa. Training in customary fishing practices is available to encourage the maintenance and revitalisation of customary fishing.
In 2005, Seafood ITO launched training in customary fishing, seafood governance, management, administration and regulatory compliance. This training is available to iwi/Mäori groups to assist them manage their customary and commercial assets.
