What is Industry Training?

Industry training emphasises workplace experience and on-the-job training, making sure it complements classroom learning where appropriate.   Through this type of training employees can work towards unit standards and qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework that are relevant to their employment. Training might be provided outside of the workplace by training providers, or in the workplace, or both.

Industry training means you can earn while you learn, building skills that are real and recognised, and that can be immediately applied in the workplace.

How is it funded?

The Government provides funding for industry training through the Industry Training Fund managed by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

Each year, TEC allocates bulk funding to Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) depending on the demand for training that each ITO can demonstrate. Demand is proven by the number and size of training agreements that each ITO has registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

Employers may apply for training subsidies by registering a training agreement with their ITO.
